NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team registered a season-high 20 shots on Saturday night, as the Owls rolled past Stonehill, 1-0 at Jess Dow Field on South Central Premier and Hamden Youth Soccer Night. With the win, Southern improved to 6-2-1, 3-1-1 in Northeast-10 competition, while the Skyhawks fell to 5-4-1, 1-4-1 in the conference.

Neither team was able to muster any sort of offense in the first half of action. In the 20th minute, Stonehill nearly opened the scoring when Michael White broke through the Owls' on a breakaway. However, his effort was denied by a spectacular kick save from sophomore goalkeeper, Andrew Esposito (East Haven, Conn.).

After the first 45 minutes of play, the two teams remained knotted at zero.

Southern's offense charged out of the gate in the second half. The Owls recorded seven shots in the first 10 minutes of play, finally reaching the scoreboard in the 55th minute. Sophomore Paul Templeton (Saltcoats, Scotland) whipped in a cross from the right side, where Cedric Panzu (Mons-En-Baroeul, France) headed a shot into the left side netting for a 1-0 lead. Panzu's third mark of the year proved to be the difference as the Owls held on for a 1-0 victory.

Esposito collected four saves in his fourth win of the 2009 campaign, while Brandon McFarlane made seven saves for the visiting Skyhawks.
