NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Four members of the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team recorded double-digit figures but Tuesday night's Northeast-10 match-up came down to a desperation heave from the Owls that was no good, as they fell short to Saint Michael's, 78-76. Graduate forward
Clyde Chapman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the team with a game-high 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting and was one rebound shy of a double-double.
With the loss, the Owls fall to 2-13 overall and 1-9 in the Northeast-10. The Purple Knights are now 6-8 overall and 2-8 in conference play.
The first half featured a high scoring affair from both teams. Saint Michael's relied on their three-point shooting early on as they connected on 7-of-13 from downtown. The Owls, despite only hitting one from behind-the-arc, shot 57% from the floor as they trailed just three at the half, 43-40.
Chapman led all scorers at the break with 16 and freshman guard
Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) added 10 of his own. Sam Cieplicki and Tom Ward connected on 5-of-8 shooting from three-point range to lead Saint Michael's.
The second half was very similar to the first as both teams kept the pressure on their opponent with one basket after another. The game came down to the final minute of play in which Southern forced Saint Michael's to win from the line.
Sophomore guard
Chris Harris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a lay-up with four seconds to go as they trailed by one. The Owls quickly fouled Cieplicki as he went 1-of-2 from the charity stripe, giving Southern one last chance. However, with just two seconds left, Harris was forced to heave one from half court which went too far right as the Purple Knights claimed the victory.
Carberry added 18 points for the Owls and junior
Dexton Williamson (Bridgeport, Conn.) notched a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. He also tied a team-high three assists with Harris, who also dropped double-digit figures in the game with 10.
The Owls return to the court on Saturday as they head to Franklin Pierce. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
