NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman guard
Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) of the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team posted a game-high 29 points on Saturday but the Owls dropped to Franklin Pierce in Northeast-10 competition, 81-61. The game featured two different halves as the Ravens pulled away in the final twenty minutes of regulation to claim the victory.
The Owls are now 2-14 overall and 1-10 in the Northeast-10. With the win, Franklin Pierce improved to 8-8 overall and 3-8 in conference play.
Southern came out strong to start the first half. Defensively, they held the Ravens to just two points in the first four and a half minutes of play. Shortly after, their offense jumped out to their largest lead of the game, up 12 at the 10:13 mark. Franklin Pierce would retaliate, however, to cut the deficit to two at the half.
Carberry led all scorers with 16 points at halftime and hit three from behind-the-arc. Junior
Dexton Williamson (Bridgeport, Conn.) added eight points for the Owls and grabbed three rebounds. John Hegarty and Kinard Dozier led their team with six points each.
The second half was a different story as the Ravens came out scoring and remained hot for the final twenty minutes of play. They won by the final score of 81-61.
Carberry recorded his second highest scoring output this season with 29 points on 11-of-19 shooting. He also recorded two steals and grabbed four rebounds. Williamson notched his second straight double-double with 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
Dozier led the Ravens with 20 points and Hegarty and Jeff Manchester recorded 16 and 11 respectively.
The Owls return to action on January 20 for another NE-10 road contest against Saint Anselm at 7:30 p.m.
