NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University men's swimming and diving team put forth several fine showings, but fell short to Marist, 141-88, on Saturday afternoon at the Hutchinson Natatorium. Sophomores
Matthew Sorena (Brookfield, Conn.),
Austin Mizzell (Bristol, Conn.) and
Miguel Nesrala (Santo Domingo, D.R.) each tallied individual victories in the competition.
Sorena,
Thomas Hardy (East Massapequa, N.Y.), Nesrala and Mizzell put the Owls in front early with strong performances in the opening events. Sorena won the 1650-yard freestyle (16:09.30), Hardy followed with a second place effort in the 200-yard freestyle, Nesrala took home the gold in the 50-yard freestyle (22.20) and Mizzell won the 400-yard IM (4:13.77).
After Sorena took home second in the 200-yard butterfly event, Nesrala captured first place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.48. Later in the 24th event, Mizzell defeated the rest of the field in the 200-yard breaststroke event with a time of 2:10.09.
Sorena, Hardy, Nesrala and Mizzell wrapped up the competition with a first place performance in the 200-yard freestyle relay event. The quartet finished with a time of 1:28.15.
The Owls return to action on Jan. 17 with a competition at Connecticut College. The event will begin at 12 p.m.
