NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Four members of the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team registered double figures as the Owls captured their fifth conference win of the season behind a stellar second half performance on Saturday afternoon. Senior Jacqueline Johannes (Southbury, Conn.) recorded a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds as SCSU moved to 8-4, 5-2 in Northeast-10 competition with a 63-60 victory at Moore Field House.

Despite shooting 26 percent from the floor in the first half, an 11-1 spurt midway through the opening stanza put the Owls in front. Johannes led all scorers at the break with 11 points and 10 rebounds, sending Southern into halftime with a one point lead. Logan Lentz (Chambersburg, Pa.) and Shelley Pierson (Watervliet, N.Y.) each added six points for the home team.

After the intermission, the teams exchanged baskets until the Owls broke out on a 9-1 run at the 9:24 mark. However, a three-pointer by Olivia DeMarco capped off a 17-11 run by New Haven, bringing the visiting Chargers to within three points. After a two minute scoring drought, Nicole Pollard knocked down a lay-up with 3.1 seconds remaining, making it a one point game.

Despite the late surge, two free-throws by Lentz closed out the scoring, moving Southern ahead of New Haven in the NE-10 standings.

Johannes led the way with 18 points on 6-9 shooting, hauled in 15 rebounds and dished out a game-high six assists. Lentz poured in 12 points going 2-3 from downtown, while LaTisha Hatcher (Detroit, Mich.) and Pierson combined for 21 points and nine rebounds. Allyson Smith (East Hampton, Conn.) grabbed five boards to go along with eight points, propelling the Owls to their sixth win at Moore Field House this year.

A key component to the victory was Southern's effort on the boards. The Owls out-rebounded the Chargers, 48-38, including 15 offensive rebounds. In addition, Southern tenacious defense held New Haven to 36 percent shooting and forced 15 turnovers, nine coming in the second half of play.

The Owls return to action on Jan. 6 with a home game against NE-10 Conference foe, Stonehill College. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Moore Field House.
