NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior guard
Logan Lentz (Chambersburg, Pa.) registered a team-high 15 points on Wednesday night, but the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team was defeated by Stonehill, 77-67, at Moore Field House. With the loss, the Owls dropped to 8-5, 5-3 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Skyhawks improved to 11-4, 6-2 in the league.
Stonehill came out of the locker rooms on fire, connecting on 60 percent of their first half field goals. However, Southern kept the game within reach behind five three-pointers, only trailing by seven at the break.
Senior
Allyson Smith (East Hampton, Conn.) led all scorers with 10 points going 4-of-8 from the floor, while
Jacqueline Johannes (Southbury, Conn.),
Shelley Pierson (Watervliet, N.Y.) and Lentz each chipped in with eight points. Megan Methven led the visiting Skyhawks with eight points at halftime.
The Owls battled back after the intermission, chipping away at their deficit. At the 14:09 mark, a jumper in the paint by Lentz left Southern a mere four points behind.
Despite the early second half rally, Stonehill's prolific shooting prohibited Southern from a late surge. The Skyhawks maintained a comfortable lead down the stretch, making their free-throws to keep the Owls out of reach. The loss marked Southern's second defeat in Moore Field House this season.
Lentz finished with 15 point on 6-of-13 shooting, 2-of-4 from behind the arc and pulled down five rebounds for the Owls. Smith registered 13 points, whereas
LaTisha Hatcher (Detroit, Mich.) and Johannes combined for 24 points and 18 rebounds. Pierson connected on 50 percent of her shots for 13 points.
The Owls return to action on Jan. 9 with an away game against NE-10 Conference foe, Bentley. Game time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the Dana Center in Waltham, Mass.
