WALTHAM, Mass. – Juniors
Logan Lentz (Chambersburg, Pa.) and
Shelley Pierson (Watervliet, N.Y.) combined for 27 points on Saturday afternoon, but the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team was defeated at Bentley by the final score of 66-48. With the loss, the Owls descended to 8-6, 5-4 in Northeast-10 Conference competition, while the Falcons improved to 9-5, 7-2 in the league.
After the Falcons jumped out to 16-5 run to start the game, Southern used the three-point line to inch back into the game. Lentz led the way going 4-of-5 from the floor, 3-of-3 from behind the arc and grabbed four rebounds for Owls in the opening stanza. However, a balanced attack that featured seven different players in the scoring column, granted Bentley a 34-27 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Pierson came out on fire and connected on three of her first four shot attempts. After a three-pointer from senior
Allyson Smith (East Hampton, Conn.), the Owls trailed, 45-40, with 12:11 remaining in regulation.
After a Bentley timeout, the Falcons battled back with a 9-0 run over the next 5:06 of play. Bentley's Colette Josey poured in 11 second half points en route the Falcons third consecutive conference win.
Lentz put forth her best offensive performance of the season with a team-high 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting, 4-of-4 from downtown and dished out two assists. Pierson added 13 points going 5-of-16 from the floor, while Smith and
LaTisha Hatcher (Detroit, Mich.) each chimed in with eight and six points respectively.
The Owls return to action on Jan. 12 with a home game against Saint Michael's. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Moore Field House.
