Late Surge Sends Men's Basketball Past Bridgeport, 59-56

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Trevon Hamlet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) converted a layup with 1:22 remaining and the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team hung on from there for a 59-56 victory over the University of Bridgeport on Sunday evening.

The Owls improved to 2-0 on the year with the win, while the Purple Knights are now 0-2.

Senior Chazz McCarter (New Haven, Conn.) led four Owls in double figures with 16 points. He also hit two free throws late in the contest to secure the win.

Freshman Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.) added 15 points, while Hamlet and Dexton Williamson (Bridgeport, Conn.) each had 10 points in the winning effort.

Southern Connecticut held a 35-28 lead at the half behind a combined 21 points from McCarter and Langston. 

The Owls scored the first bucket of the second half to extend their lead to nine. However, Bridgeport started to claw back from there. The Purple Knights finally surged in front, 50-48, with 8:36 to play. However, SCSU used a 7-0 run to take a 55-50 lead.

Bridgeport scored the next six points, but the visitors countered with the last four points to secure the win.

The Owls are back in action on Wednesday night when they host LeMoyne.
