NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Senior forward
Shelley Pierson (Watervliet, N.Y.) posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead three Owls in double figures in a 61-51 victory for the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team over LeMoyne on Wednesday night. The Owls improved to 3-0, 1-0 in Northeast-10 Conference play with the win.
LeMoyne jumped out with the first six points of the game, but the Owls used a 9-3 run to take its first lead of the game at 9-8. Leading 11-10, SCSU then went on an 11-4 spurt to extend its cushion to eight at 22-14.
Southern's largest lead of the first half was a dozen at 31-19, which came following a jumper by
Logan Lentz (Chambersburg, Pa.). The Owls led 32-22 at halftime.
The hosts scored the first five points of the second half to push its lead to 15 at 37-22. However, LeMoyne scored 20 of the next 31 points to close within six at 48-42 with 7:19 remaining.
The Owls went on an 11-0 run to put the game away from there and went on to the 10 point win.
Keshia Primo (Missassauga, Ont.) scored a team-high 13 points for the Owls. Lentz also reached double figures with 10 points.
Southern Connecticut is back in action on Nov. 23 when it travels to Pace.
