Late Run Sends Women’s Basketball Past Molloy, 58-50

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior guard Logan Lentz (Chambersburg, Pa.) connected on a pair of three-pointers on consecutive possessions late in regulation, and the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team held off Molloy from there in a 58-50 non-conference on Thursday evening at Moore Field House.

Southern Connecticut improved to 5-6 overall with the win, while Molloy dropped to 2-9.

Trailing 48-46 with just over three minutes to play, Lentz canned a trifecta to give the hosts their first lead since the opening minute of the game. She then hit another three-pointer on the next Owls' possession to extend the SCSU cushion to four at 52-48.

In all, the Owls ended the game with a 12-2 run to pick up the victory.

Four Owls finished in double figures. Shelley Pierson (Watervliet, N.Y.) registered a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Keshia Primo (Mississauga, Ont.) added 11, while Lentz and junior Alex Fiola (Fall River, Mass.) each had 10 points.

Fiola opened the scoring in the contest with a three-pointer for the Owls. However, Molloy followed with a 16-2 run to take its largest lead of the half at 16-5. The game was delayed for approximately 20 minutes with 12:41 remaining in the frame due to a shot clock malfunction.

From there, Southern Connecticut scored six straight points to close within five at 16-11. Molloy countered by scoring seven of the next 11 points to push its cushion back to eight at 23-15. The Owls used a 9-1 run to even the score at 24-24 before the visitors knocked down two free throws in the waning seconds of the half to carry a 26-24 lead into the intermission.

Molloy scored the first six points of the second half to take a 32-24 lead and actually led by as many as nine in the stanza, 37-28, with 15:49 to play.

The Owls then went on an 11-2 run to tie the game at 39-39 before the visitors ran off five straight points to regain the lead.

Molloy maintained its advantage into the final three minutes until Lentz connected on her first field goal of the day. She had eight points in the decisive spurt to close the contest.

The Owls are back in action on Sunday for a 1:30 p.m. start against New Haven.
