NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman forward
Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.) scored 24 of his career-high 32 points in the second half and overtime as the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team pulled out a thrilling 102-97 double overtime victory over Assumption on Tuesday night. The Owls improved to 7-1, 5-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play with the win and have won three in a row.
It was an exhausting contest that included 12 ties, 13 lead changes and six players – three from each team – foul out.
The Owls led 43-34 at halftime, but Assumption made its first five shots of the second half to trim the gap to a point at 47-46. In all, the Greyhounds used a 15-4 spurt out of the locker room to take a 49-47 lead.
Aside from a 44 second spurt in which the Owls held a 51-49 lead – that coming after a three-pointer form
Ante Cosic (Brampton, Ontario) – Assumption either led or the game was tied all the way into the final minute of regulation.
With the game tied at 74, Assumption had a chance to take the lead, but
Trevon Hamlet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) came up with a block and a rebound to give the Owls the ball back. Immediately following the play, the Assumption bench was issued a technical foul, and Hamlet knocked down both free throws to give SCSU a 76-74 lead.
However, the Owls turned the ball over on their ensuing possession, and Mike Baldarelli hit a layup to even the game again. Langston knocked down two free throws with 38 seconds to go to restore the two-point cushion, but Tobin Haase hit a jumper on Assumption's next possession to even the score at 78 and send it to overtime.
The teams were tied at 83 early in the first overtime when Langston scored five straight points to put the Owls in front, 88-83. However, Assumption scored five in a row to even the score once again. Langston answered with a jumper to put SCSU back in the lead, but Haase connected on two free throws to tie it at 90-90. The Owls turned the ball over on their next possession, giving Assumption a final shot, but the Greyhounds missed two shots in the closing seconds to extend the game to a second overtime.
Trailing 93-92 just over a minute into the second extra session, SCSU scored four straight points on a pair of layups by Langston. The Owls would not trail again and held on for a five-point win.
Hamlet tallied a double-double with 27 points and 12 rebounds for the Owls before fouling out.
Dexton Williamson (Bridgeport, Conn.) also reached double figures with 12 points in the win.
The Owls are back in action on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. when they host Southern New Hampshire in a non-league contest.
