NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The senior duo of
Jacqueline Johannes (Southbury, Conn.) and
Allyson Smith (East Hampton, Conn.) combined for 30 points on Saturday afternoon, but the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team was defeated by Northeast-10 Conference foe, AIC, on its annual 'Pink Zone' Party at Moore Field House. The final score of the contest was 74-62.
With the loss, the Owls dropped to 11-13, 8-11 in league play. The Yellowjackets moved ahead of Southern with the win, improving to 10-14, 8-11 in the conference.
In a first half that featured eight ties and seven lead changes, neither team managed to take control. Both teams connected on over 50 percent of their field goal attempts and went 8-of-9 from the free-throw line. Johannes led the way for the Owls with 10 points and four rebounds, as the Owls and the Yellowjackets took a 36-36 tie score into halftime.
After the intermission, AIC used the three-point shot to its advantage en route to an 11-0 run over a six minute span. The Yellowjackets finished with nine three-point field goals, including five in the second half of play.
After opening a game-high 16 point lead with just under six minutes remaining, the Owls put together a run of their own to cut their deficit to 11 points. However, the Yellowjackets knocked down their free-throws in the closing minutes for their eighth conference win of the season.
Johannes finished with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds to lead the way for the Owls. Smith collected another double-digit scoring performance with 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting, while
Logan Lentz (Chambersburg, Pa.) added 10 points and three rebounds.
Alex Fiola (Fall River, Mass.) chimed in with eight points, all coming in the first half of action.
The Owls return to action on Feb. 17 with an away game against Adelphi. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Garden City, N.Y.
