ALBANY, N.Y. –
Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) scored a game-high 24 points but the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team lost a Northeast-10 contest to Saint Rose on Saturday by the score of 87-71. Carberry hit five from downtown and went a perfect 7-of-7 from the line.
Southern has fallen to 2-24 overall and 1-20 in the conference with the loss as Saint Rose improved to 16-10 and 13-8 in the NE-10.
For the first 17 minutes of play, the action went back and forth as both teams exchanged baskets. Carberry came out hot and recorded nine straight points, hitting two from downtown. However, Shea Bromirski and Sheldon Griffin dropped 11 and 10 points respectively to help the Golden Knights pull away towards the end of the half, as Southern trailed 42-31 at the break.
Kieran Ramsey (North Hollywood, Calif.) posted 10 points at halftime on 3-of-5 shooting and went a perfect 4-for-4 from the line. As a team, the Owls shot 40% from behind-the-arc and were 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. Saint Rose went 54.3% from the floor and went to the line just once.
The second half was a different story. Southern remained in the game and even cut the deficit to one after an 11-0 run sparked by a
Ante Cosic (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) jumper, however Saint Rose regained a commanding lead to claim a 87-71 win as they completed the sweep over the Owls this season.
Ramsey added 17 points for Southern on 6-of-14 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds.
Clyde Chapman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds and also matched a team-high four assists.
The Owls return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 24 for their final regular season contest at Moore Field House. They host Assumption at 7:30 p.m.
