NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore third baseman #A.J. Rouleau# (Westborough, Mass.) broke open a tie game with a RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning, keying a four-run rally for the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team in a 7-3 win over No. 19 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday. The Ravens came back to win the nightcap by an 11-5 score. However, the Owls remain in first place atop the Northeast-10 Conference with a 10-2 mark and are now 17-6-1 overall.
Franklin Pierce is now 16-9, 4-3 in league play.
The first game was a back-and-forth affair. Franklin Pierce struck first with a run in the top of the first and added another tally in the fourth.
The Owls went ahead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Bryan Dorsey (Cheshire, Conn.) opened the inning with a single.
Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.) was hit by a pitch to put two runners on before Rouleau laced an opposite field double to tie the game. Following a fly out and a walk to
Eric Schlitter (Guilford, Conn.) which allowed Rouleau to get to third,
Jordan Hockenberry (Glastonbury, Conn.) delivered an infield single to plate the go-ahead run.
Franklin Pierce tied the game in the top of the eighth, but the Owls took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame.
Kyle Rosadino (Berwyn, Pa.) singled to start the rally. Dorsey sacrificed him to second and Geffert was then intentionally walked. Rouleau's single to right scored Rosadino and moved Geffert to third.
After a walk to
Nick DeProspo (Worcester, Mass.) and a strikeout, Hockenberry was hit by a pitch to bring in a run.
Michael Cleary (West Boylston, Mass.) followed with a two-run single to put the game out of reach.
Ryan Yerina (Trumbull, Conn.) worked eight and a third innings to get the win for the Owls.
Michael Johnston (Thomaston, Conn.) came in to get the final two outs and pick up the save.
Franklin Pierce jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the nightcap, but the Owls broke out for a five-run rally in the seventh. Schlitter had the big hit, a three-run bases clearing double.
However, the visitors scored three times in the top of the ninth to secure the win.
Southern Connecticut is back in action on Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. start against Assumption.
