No. 3 SCSU Baseball Falls To No. 2 Pace, 5-3, In NE10 First Round

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut baseball lost to Pace, 5-3, in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship First Round in Pleasantville, N.Y. With the loss, the Owls' 2025 season ends with a record of 24-20.

Jack Drewry hit a milestone in the NE10 matchup in Pleasantville as he became the new recordholder of the games played record. Suiting up for game No. 205 of his career, he passed Mike DeMartino's record of 204 for the most games played in program history.

Izaiah Walker was 2-for-5 with a double, RBI and a run scored. Chad Fedeli was 2-for-4 with a RBI while Jake Gruttadauria and Zachary Droukas also collected two hits apiece. Jace Alvino took the loss to drop to 2-3 on the season while Steve Phillips gave up one run on three hits over 3 1/3.

The Owls got on the board with a run in the top of the 2nd. Izaiah Walker jumped on a full-count fastball and lined a singled to left field. After he moved to second on a wild pitch, Chad Fedeli singled through the left side of the infield to score Walker and give the Owls a 1-0 lead.

Pace took a 2-1 lead on a two-run homer by Luke Rivara. After the Setters led off with a singled, Alvino retired the next two batters and worked a full count to Rivara before giving up the home run. In the top of the 4th, Jack Drewry led off with a single up the middle before Walker hit a deep fly ball the opposite way down the right-field line. The ball landed out of the reach of Pace's right fielder and took an Owls-friendly bounce into the corner of the stadium, allowing Drewry to score from first to tie the game at 2-2 while Walker cruised into second with a double.

In the bottom of the 5th, Pace's first two batters singled before Benjamin Tullo bunted both runners into scoring position. It was Luke Rivara ago with a singled to left field that scored both runners and gave Pace a 4-2 lead. Alvino got the next batter out and was replaced by Steve Phillips. Alvino finished the day with four runs allowed on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings. Phillips was able to get out of a bases-loaded jam to end the inning with the Owls trailing by two runs.

In the bottom of the 6th, Pace's leadoff batter, Domini Rivara connected for a solo homer to push Pace's lead to three runs, 5-2. The next batter reached on an error and moved to second on a wild pitch but Phillips was able to pitch out the inning to strand two runners.

In the top of the 7th, Derrick Jagello led off with a single to left field before Spencer Chard and Brennan Staubley both walked to load the bases. Jake Gruttadauria hit an infield fly before Patrick Dillon hit a towering fly ball to center field that scored Jagello to cut Pace's lead to 5-3, but the Owls were unable to get another run out of the inning. Phillips would allow just one baserunner the rest of the way, retiring nine of the next 10 batters he faced heading to the top of the 9th.
