NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore forward
Trevon Hamlet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led three players in double figures with 18 points, but the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team lost to Saint Anselm, 92-81, on Wednesday evening at Moore Field House.
The Owls are now 9-7 overall, 6-6 in Northeast-10 play. Saint Anselm improved to 13-3, 9-3 in league action.
Hamlet added eight rebounds and six assists to go along with his 18 points.
Chazz McCarter (New Haven, Conn.) scored 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.) also reached double figures with 13 points.
The game was a back and forth affair throughout. SCSU led 51-44, with 17:41 remaining before the Hawks scored 13 straight points. The Owls scored six in a row to even the score at 57. The final tie of the game came with just over seven minutes remaining at 68-68, but Saint Anselm surged ahead and sealed the game in the final minutes by hitting 12 of 14 free throws in the final 2:01.
Saint Anselm jumped out to an early lead and led by as many as nine at 23-14 with 10:51 to go in the opening half. Southern Connecticut answered with a 14-4 run to take a 28-27 lead with 6:37 to play before halftime.
After Saint Anselm briefly regained the lead, SCSU scored nine in a row to take a 37-30 advantage. The Owls led by eight in the final minute of the frame and carried a 41-35 lead into halftime.
Joe Groski (New Milford, Conn.) set new career highs with eight points and five rebounds for the Owls off the bench.
Kieran Ramsey (North Hollywood, Calif.) also had eight points for the Owls.
The Owls are back in action on Saturday for a road game at Southern New Hampshire.
