NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore forward Trevon Hamlet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led all scorers with 17 points, but the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team dropped a 57-54 decision to the University of New Haven on Sunday afternoon at Moore Field House.
The Owls are now 8-3 overall, 5-2 in Northeast-10 play. New Haven improved to 3-7, 2-5 in league action.
The game started out evenly matched on both sides. However, with the game tied at 7-7, UNH went on a 7-0 spurt. The Chargers' eventually stretched it to a 13-4 run to take their biggest lead of the first half at 20-11.
Southern Connecticut answered with a 10-0 run of its own to take its first lead of the game at 21-20. Kieran Ramsey (North Hollywood, Calif.) capped the run with a layup.
From there, the teams battled forward with eight lead changes and one tie in the final 6:34 of the half. The Owls held a 34-33 lead at the break.
The second half featured runs from both teams in the early going. With the game tied at 40-40, UNH went on an 8-0 run to take the lead by the same cushion. The Owls countered with an 8-0 run of their own to even the score at 48-48.
The Chargers scored the next six points and nine of the next 10 to build a 57-50 cushion with 2:35 remaining. Southern Connecticut tallied the only four points the rest of the way, but came up just short. Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.) had a chance to force overtime, but his three-pointer at the buzzer was off target.
Hamlet finished with 17 points and eight rebounds. Chris Harris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was the only other Owl in double digits with 10 points. Chazz McCarter (New Haven, Conn.) had nine points and six rebounds, while Ramsey added eight points and 11 boards. Langston also had a career-high nine rebounds. Andrew Zito (Windsor, Conn.) finished with six points, a team-high six assists and five rebounds.
The Owls are back in action on Wednesday for a road game at Stonehill.
