MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior
Shelley Pierson (Watervliet, N.Y.) registered a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, but the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team was defeated by Southern New Hampshire on Saturday, 78-56.
The Owls are now 6-12, 2-11 in Northeast-10 play. SNHU is 9-8, 7-6.
Milena Lazarevic (Gmunden, Austria) and
Moni Smith-Ocran (Bronx, N.Y.) each added eight points for the Owls.
Southern New Hampshire raced out to an 18-2 lead and took control of the contest from the early going. Trailing by 17 at 22-5, the Owls went on a 10-0 run to close the gap to single digits at seven points, 22-15. However, the hosts scored 11 of the final 15 points of the half to carry a 33-19 lead into halftime.
Southern Connecticut hung with SNHU for most of the second half. By the midway point of the stanza, the Owls had closed to within just six at 50-44. They got as close as five points with 6:26 remaining at 54-49.
The Owls were still down just six points, 62-56, with 2:28 left. However, SNHU scored the final 16 points of the game for the final 22-point margin.
SCSU is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Merrimack.
