NEW HAVEN, Conn. – For the second time this season, freshman forward Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.) connected on a running jumper at the buzzer to give the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team a victory. This time, Langston sunk Merrimack as time expired to give the Owls a 68-66 win at Moore Field House.

Southern Connecticut is now 10-8, 7-7 in Northeast-10 Conference play. Merrimack is now 9-8, 5-8 in league play.

Earlier this season, Langston beat Saint Rose with a jumper as time expired.

The Owls were ahead by a point, 66-65, with 2.9 seconds remaining when Darin Mency hit one of two free throws to tie the game. Langston took the inbounds near midcourt and drove just inside the three-point line before floating a shot through the basket.

Langston finished with 15 points and five rebounds. Trevon Hamlet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Owls with 26 points. Chazz McCarter (New Haven, Conn.) also hit double digits with 11 points.

It was a contest that the Owls led for essentially the final 34 minutes of play. In the first half, SCSU held no more than a five point advantage and went into the locker room with a 32-27 cushion.

Leading by a point, 38-37, with 14:30 remaining, the Owls ran off seven in a row to take a 45-37 lead. In all, they used a 17-4 run to build a 55-41 lead with 9:13 left to play.

Merrimack chipped away over the final minutes of regulation and finally tied the game at 64-64 with 1:28 remaining. McCarter quickly put the Owls back in front with a layup, and SCSU kept the lead when Aaron Strothers made only one of two free throws for the Warriors.

The Owls had a chance to extend their lead in the final minute, but McCarter's shot was blocked and Merrimack had another opportunity. Mency missed his first free throw, but connected on the second to even the score.

That set the stage for Langston, who sent the Moore Field House crowd into a frenzy with his winning shot.

Southern Connecticut is back in action on Saturday at UMass-Lowell.
