Chazz McCarter (New Haven, Conn.) finished with 21 and 16 points, respectively, but the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team dropped a 71-56 decision at Stonehill on Wednesday evening.
The Owls are now 8-4, 5-3 in Northeast-10 Conference play. Stonehill is 10-3, 5-3.
Stonehill was the aggressor early on, as it scored the first 12 points of the contest. However, the Owls stormed back with a 20-3 run over the ensuing six-minute stretch to build a five-point lead at 20-15.
The Skyhawks would score the next five points to even the game at 20-20, but the Owls held the lead for the remainder of the half.
Chris Harris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a three-pointer in the closing seconds of the frame to give the Owls a 32-26 lead at the break.
McCarter hit a three-pointer in the opening seconds of the second half to put SCSU up by nine, its largest lead of the game. Stonehill responded with a 14-3 run to tie the score at 39-39.
Leading by just a bucket, 48-46, Stonehill seized control of the game with a 13-2 run to increase its lead to 61-48. The Owls were unable to trim the deficit to single digits the rest of the way.
Southern Connecticut is back in action on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. when it hosts No. 22 nationally ranked Bentley.
