NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Despite a 25-point performance from sophomore forward
Trevon Hamlet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and a double-double from freshman
Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.), the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team lost to No. 22 nationally ranked Bentley on Saturday afternoon, 79-63.
The Owls are now 8-5, 5-4 in Northeast-10 Conference play. Bentley remained perfect in league action at 9-0 and is now 11-2 overall.
It was a tale of two halves for the Owls, who held a three-point lead at halftime, 28-25. However, Bentley shot 58.1 percent in the second half (18-of-31) to rally back for the win.
Southern Connecticut used a stellar defensive effort in the early going to build a 15-point first half cushion. Bentley connected on just three of its first 29 shots and SCSU turned that effort into a 24-9 lead with 5:26 remaining in the frame.
However, the Falcons closed the half with a 16-4 run to climb within three at the break, 28-25.
Bentley scored the first five points of the second half to take its first lead since the opening two minutes. In all, the Falcons used 22-6 run out of the locker room to extend its advantage to 13 at 47-34, with 13:52 to play. Bentley hit eight of 10 shots during that stretch, including four three-pointers. Stretching back to the first half, the Falcons outscored the Owls by a 38-10 margin.
Southern Connecticut rallied back and climbed to within 10 points on a three-pointer from Langston to make it 61-51 with just under seven minutes to play. However, they would get no closer.
Hamlet hit on 10-of-19 shots, including four three-pointers, and also pulled down eight rebounds. Langston scored 12 points and added 11 rebounds and four assists.
The Owls are back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to St. Michael's in a 7:30 p.m. start.
