Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior running back Rashaad Slowley (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) rushed for 168 yards and a touchdown and senior Andre Privott (Middletown, Conn.) returned a punt for a touchdown, as the Southern Connecticut State University football team claimed a 16-6 win over Stonehill on Homecoming. The Owls' defense forced three turnovers and held the Skyhawks to 228 yards of total offense in a strong snowstorm.

The Owls improved to 7-2, 6-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play with the win. Stonehill is now 2-7, 1-6.

Both teams tried to establish momentum in the early going, but found rough sledding through the developing storm. However, the Owls used a special teams touchdown to open the scoring when Privott scampered 35 yards for a score with 6:07 left in the first quarter. Christopher Hazelton (Bristol, Conn.) added the PAT to make it 7-0.

Stonehill put together a 12-play, 64-yard drive that resulted in a touchdown early in the second quarter. However, Gavin Nelson (Cambridge, Mass.) blocked the PAT, and Sam-uel Johnson (Newark, N.J.) picked it up and went the distance the other way for two points to give the Owls a 9-6 lead.

Later in the half, Southern Connecticut put together a six-play, 40-yard drive that concluded with a 20-yard touchdown run by Slowley. Hazelton's PAT made it 16-6 at intermission.

Both teams had opportunities to score points in the second half, but turnovers and strong defense resulted in no additional points posted on the scoreboard.

Chevar Rankins (Middletown, Conn.) had 10 tackles to lead the defense in that department. Nelson finished with seven tackles, a sack, a blocked PAT and forced a fumble on the day.

The Owls have next week off before closing the regular season on Nov. 12 with a home game against Merrimack.
