Balanced Attack Leads Men’s Basketball To Season Opening Win

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Five players scored in double figures to lead the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team to an 84-64 win over Post University in the 2011-12 season opener for both teams on Saturday.

Sophomore Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.) had a game-high 18 points and a team-high four assists to lead the Owls' scorers. Trevon Hamlet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added a double-double with 17 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks. Freshman Luke Houston (Pearl River, N.Y.) chipped in 13 points and five rebounds, while Dominique Langston (Bridgeport, Conn,) recorded 11 points and nine rebounds. Senior Kieran Ramsey (North Hollywood, Calif.) rounded out the quintet with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Southern Connecticut scored the first four points of the game and led from start to finish. The Owls scored nine of the first 11 points within the first 3:09. A three-pointer by Houston gave SCSU its first double digit lead of the contest at 16-6 with 13:46 to play in the opening half.



A 15-point cushion was the biggest of the first stanza for the Owls, who saw their lead trimmed to six at 35-29 after a 14-5 run by the Eagles. However, SCSU scored the final four points of the half to take a 39-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Owls then put the game away early in the second half. Langston scored 13 points in the first six minutes, including a three-pointer to cap a 15-4 run, that pushed the advantage to 54-33. Southern Connecticut led by as many as 25 and went on to the 20 point win.



Kyle Callanan (Bennington, Vt.) added nine points in his collegiate debut for the Owls. SCSU held a 51-45 edge in rebounding and held the Eagles to just 30.7 percent shooting from the field.

Southern Connecticut returns to action tomorrow at 4 p.m. when it takes on the University of Bridgeport.
