NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team dropped a 61-53 decision to the University of New Haven on Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference contest at Moore Field House. The Owls, who trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half, had a chance to tie the game in the final 30 seconds, but were unable to overcome the Chargers.
The Owls are now 5-4 and 4-3 in Northeast-10 Conference play. New Haven improved to 7-2, 5-2 in league play.
Freshman
Tylon Smith (Manchester, Conn.) led the Owls with 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field.
Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.) added 12 points, while
Dominique Langston (Bridgeport, Conn.) added 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Owls had rallied from a second half deficit in their previous three home games and seemed poised to do so once again on Saturday. The Chargers built a 42-32 in the first 2:30 of the second half before the Owls scored five straight points. SCSU closed within two points, 48-46, following a layup by Smith with 8:45 remaining.
UNH remained in front into the closing minutes. Trailing 55-50,
Dominique Langston hit a three-pointer with 1:01 left to trim the gap to two, 55-53. The Owls then forced a missed shot, but couldn't convert on the offensive end. The Chargers scored the final six points of the game to secure the win.
The Chargers jumped out to an early 13-9 lead before SCSU used an 11-0 run to build its largest lead of the game at seven, 20-13. However, a 14-3 run put UNH back in front, and the visitors carried a 36-30 into the locker room at halftime.
Southern Connecticut is back in action on Dec. 18 for a 3:30 p.m. home game against Concordia.
