WORCESTER, Mass. - Sophomore forward Trevon Hamlet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied 30 points to go over the 1,000 point plateau for his collegiate career, but Assumption scored the final five points of the game to secure a 76-73 win over the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team on Wednesday night. The Owls will enter the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament as the No. 10 seed and will play at No. 7 Adelphi on Saturday at 1 p.m. SCSU and Adelphi split the regular season series, with each team winning on the road. It's the first league tournament appearance for the Owls since the 2001-02 season.
The Owls finish the regular season 12-14 overall, 9-13 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Assumption finished the regular season tied with the Owls in league play at 9-13 and 12-16 overall.
In the first half, there were 10 registered lead changes with the fiinal lead change happening at 23-22 Assumption with six minutes left in the half. At that point, the Owls went on an 18-4 run to lead by going into the break.
In the second half, both teams traded baskets consistently as Assumption slowly chipped away at the 13 deficit that turned into a 15 point lead with 10:43 to go. Assumption rallied scoring 10 straight to bring the lead to within five points as the Owls fell apart late to lose by a final of 76-73.
Chazz McCarter (New Haven, Conn.) added 15 points for the Owls while Kieran Ramsey (North Hollywood, Calif.) had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
The Owls are next in action this Saturday at Adelphi for post season play. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
