Women's Basketball Defeats St. Michael's, 60-55 for Ninth Straight Victory

NEW HAVEN, Conn.  - The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball defeated Saint Michael's College, 60-55 to improve their winning streak to nine games on the season. The Owls got off to a slow start in the first five minutes of the game and then the Owls went on a 15-to-4 run with a couple three-point baskets from Alex Fiola (Fall River, Mass.) to build up an 11-point lead.

Southern Connecticut got to as high as a 12-point lead in the first half and went into half time up seven points. The Knights battled back througout the second half, getting the lead down to four points with 12 minutes left in the game. With the lead down to four, the Owls went on a 13-to-3 run with six of those points coming from Camille Fantini (Andover, Mass.). Southern Connecticut was able to coast the last four minutes of the game with the 14-point lead to pick up the victory.

Alex Fiola led the scoring for the Owls, recording 18 points, two rebounds and two assists. Fiola was 5-for-12 from behind the three point line. Moni Smith-Ocran (Bronx, N.Y.) helped control the boards, picking up a team-high 13 rebounds to go along with eight points. Camille Fantini recorded 11 points, nine of which came from three point range. Fantini was .500 (3-for-6) from behind the arc and also added four steals and four rebounds.



Sylvonya Moore (Stockton, Calif.) tallied nine points and six rebounds before fouling out in the second half. Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) came of the bench and gave the Owls eight points on the night.

Southern Connecticut moves to 11-3 on the season and 8-2 in Northeast-10 Conference action.The Owls next game will be Saturday, January, 14th when they travel to North Andover, Mass. to face Merrimack College. The contest is scheduled to tip-off at noon.
