Owls Rally Late To Knock Off Saint Anselm, 74-70

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Trailing by nine points, 65-56, with just over seven minutes remaining, the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team outscored host Saint Anselm 18-5 the rest of the way to pick up a 74-70 win over the Hawks on Tuesday evening.

Sophomore forward Greg Langston (Bridgeport, Conn.) ignited the comeback with 11 straight points to give the Owls a 68-67 lead. The Hawks used two free throws to go back in front before Luke Houston (Pearl River, N.Y.) hit a layup to give the Owls a 70-69 lead.

From there, Dominique Langston (Bridgeport, Conn.) hit a free throw to make it a two point lead. St. Anselm had a chance to tie at the line, but hit just one of two to close the gap to 71-70. Dominique Langston then added another free throw before Tylon Smith (Manchester, Conn.) came up with a steal and two free throws in the closing seconds to secure the win.

Greg Langston led the Owls with 19 points, while junior forward Trevon Hamlet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 18. Houston finished with 14 points, while Smith added eight points, 11 rebounds and four assists.

The Owls improved to 8-8 overall and 6-6 in league play with the win. St. Anselm dropped to 7-9 overall and 5-7 in NE-10 play with the loss. 

The Owls held a 42-38 lead early in the second half before Saint Anselm stormed back with a 12-2 run to take a 50-44 lead with 13 minutes left. From there, the lead stretched to as many as nine before the visitors went on a late run to earn the win.

The first half was closely contested. The Owls jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the opening minutes, and following a Saint Anselm run, rebuilt a six point lead, 28-22, with 7:28 to go in the frame. The Hawks closed to within one on a few occasions, but SCSU still carried a 37-36 lead into halftime.

Southern Connecticut is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Stonehill at 3:30 p.m.
