MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team had no problem taking care of St. Anselm, defeating the Hawks, 61-46. Southern Connecticut extended its win steak to 11 games with the victory.
The Owls wasted no time on the attack, going on a 15-to-0 run through the first nine minutes of the game. The Hawks finally got on the board with 11:20 left in the first half with a layup from Megan Howard. SCSU let the Hawks gain some momentum in the latter part of the first half but the Owls went into the locker room at halftime up, 25-18.
Southern Connecticut opened up the second half with a 19-4 run and increased its lead to 22 points. The 22-point lead was the biggest of the night for the Owls. The Hawks tried to get back into the game and was able to get the lead down to a low as 10 points. Saint Anselm was within 11 points with two minutes to play but the Southern Connecticut was able to hold the Hawks to pick up the win.
Freshman
Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) led the Owls in scoring with 15 points on the night. Hankton also added three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Both
Alex Fiola (Fall River, Mass.) and
Camille Fantini (Andover, Mass.) each tallied 13 points in the game. Fantini added a team-high six assists and four steals to help the Owls.
Moni Smith-Ocran (Bronx, N.Y.) helped control the glass, pulling down 15 of the Owls 37 rebounds.
With the win, Southern Connecticut moves to 13-3 on the season and 10-2 in Northeast-10 Conference action.
The Owls return home Saturday to face Stonehill College at 1:30 p.m.
