NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team comes up big against Southern New Hampshire, defeating the Penmen, 66-60.
Sylvonya Moore (Stockton, Calif.) recorded a career-best 30 points in the victory. Moore also tallied six rebounds and six steals on the night. 26 turnovers for the Penmen turned into 24 points for the Owls which helped Southern Connecticut pick up the win. The Owls improved their winning streak to 13 games. The Penmen started out the game scoring the first five points, all by team scoring-leader Sloane Sorrell. The Owls quickly went on the attack, going on a 18-to-0 run throughout seven minutes in the first half. In that seven minute span, the Penmen turned the ball over to the Owls six times. The Owls lead 32-24 after the first half.
Sylvonya Moore scored 20 of the Owls 32 points in the first half. Moore shot .818 (9-for-11) from the field and 1.000 from behind three point range (2-for-2).
In the second half, Southern New Hampshire fought back and with less than nine minutes left to play, the Penmen had the lead down to just two points. Both team began trading baskets with each other and the lead neve went above seven points for the Owls. The Penmen had the lead down to three points with three minutes left but the Owls quickly got lead back up to seven with less than two minutes to play. SCSU was able to coast the last two minutes on the seven-point lead for the win.
Moni Smith-Ocran (Bronx, N.Y.) and
Alex Fiola (Fall River) both played a supporting roll for the Owls behind Moore and recorded nine points. Ocran also tallied six rebounds and Fiola recorded three rebounds, three assists and two steals to go along with the nine points.
Keshia Primo (Mississauga, Ontario) came off the bench to give the Owls eight points, five rebounds, an assist and a steal in the game.
Southern Connecticut moves to 15-3 on the year and 12-2 in Northeast-10 Conference action. The Owls will travel to Waltham, Mass. Saturday to face Northeast-10 opponent Bentley University. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
