NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated Assumption College tonight, 71-63, for its 15th straight win. The Owls got out to a fast start in the first five minutes of the game, going on an 11-4 run. SCSU continued to dominate the first 10 minutes of the game, getting out to a 22-point lead with seven minutes remaining in the first half. Despite a second half surge by Assumption, the Owls were able to secure their 15th straight win.
SCSU moves to 17-3 on the season and 14-2 in Northeast-10 Conference action.
The Greyhounds tried to fight back and were able to get the lead down to 12 points after the first half. The Owls shot an impressive 52% from the field and 50% behind the three-point line in the first.
They Greyhounds slowly chipped away in start of the second and were able to get the lead down to four points with less than 5 minutes left. Within the last five minutes the Owls held on to their lead and were able to pick up the victory over Assumption.
Senior captain
Alex Fiola (Fall River, Mass.) led the Owls in scoring, recording 20 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals.
Lauren Allen (Sterling Heights, Mich.) and
Sylvonya Moore (Stockton, Calif.) both chipped in 12 points of their own. Moore also added eight rebounds, five assists and four steals.
Camille Fantini (Andover, Mass.) helped on the defensive side of the ball, recording a team-high seven steals to go along with seven points and eight rebounds.
Moni Smith-Ocran (Bronx, N.Y.) falls one point short of a double-double, scoring nine points and grabbing 10 boards on the night.
Keshia Primo (Mississauga, Ontario) came off the bench and gave the Owls nine points and three rebounds.
The Owls will go on the road Saturday to take on the College of Saint Rose. The game is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.
