WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman Daquan King (Plainville, Conn.) broke a 1-1 tie in the 82nd minute to lift the Southern Connecticut State University (8-5-1, 6-5-1 NE-10) men's soccer team past Assumption (4-8-2, 3-7-2 NE-10) on Tuesday night, 2-1.
The Owls would get on the board first when Mario Costa (Pawcatuck, Conn.) put a shot on goal that was later ruled an own goal on the Grey Hounds, but it gave the Owls a 1-0 lead late in the first half. The game wouldn't see another goal into late in the second half when Kieran Hallery received a pass off a throw in and was able to get a shot off and past Owls goalkeeper Stephen Sasso (Orange, Conn.) in the 81st minute to tie the game at one apiece.
Not two minutes later King would put a shot into the upper left corner to give the Owls the go ahead goal and prove to be the game winner.
King took a team high five shots in the win and the goal was his fourth of the year.
Sasso made three saves in the game and earned his fourth win in net for SCSU.
Southern Connecticut will be back in action this Friday to play its final regular season game as they host Bentley College at 7 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
