WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Junior running back
Vaughn Magee (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) rushed for 139 yards, but the Southern Connecticut State University football team lost a 48-9 decision to No. 3 nationally ranked New Haven on Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference contest.
The Owls are now 2-7 overall and 2-5 in Northeast-10 play. New Haven is 8-0, 7-0.
The contest was a 13-9 affair early in the second quarter, but the Chargers scored the final 35 points of the game.
UNH took a 7-0 lead after a two-yard first quarter touchdown pass and the score remained that way after the opening 15 minutes. Southern Connecticut capped a 13-play, 63-yard drive with a 32-yard field goal from
Devin Silverman (Berlin, Conn.) exactly one minute into the second frame to make it 7-3.
The Chargers added a touchdown on their next drive, but a failed two-point try held the lead at 13-3. SCSU answered with a six-play, 73-yard march that was capped by a 17-yard touchdown scamper from
Dequane June (Bronx, N.Y.). The PAT was blocked to keep the score at 13-9.
UNH added two more touchdowns before the half to build a 27-9 lead at the intermission. The hosts scored one more touchdown in the third quarter and two more in the final 15 minutes for a 48-9 final.
June finished with 67 yards on 19 carries.
Jacob Jablonski (Gales Ferry, Conn.) completed 9-of-16 passes for 106 yards.
Willie Epps (Norwalk, Conn.) had a team-high 60 receiving yards on three catches, while
Jayson Holt (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) and
Jerome Cunningham (Waterbury, Conn.) also had three receptions.
Malcolm Crosson (Glastonbury, Conn.) had a team-high eight tackles on the defensive side of the ball.
The Owls are back in action on Nov. 3 at 1 p.m. for a home game against Bentley. SCSU will honor its senior class prior to the contest.
