PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University football team scored the first 27 points of the game and never looked back in a 47-26 victory over Pace on Saturday afternoon.
The Owls won their second straight game to improve to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in Northeast-10 Conference play. Pace is now 0-6 overall and 0-5 in league action.
Quarterback
Jacob Jablonski (Gales Ferry, Conn.) threw for a career-high 337 yards while completing 17 passes, three of which were touchdowns, on 23 attempts. Wide receiver
Willie Epps tallied six catches for 180 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Junior running back
Vaughn Magee (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) hit the 100 yard mark for the fourth time in the past five games with 168 yards on 26 carries and two touchdowns.
With his 180 yards and two touchdown receptions, Epps moved into second place all-time at SCSU in receiving yards (2,680) and is now third in touchdown receptions with 25.
In all, the Owls totaled 618 yards of total offense and 30 first downs in an impressive offensive showing.
Southern Connecticut's opening scoring drive spanned 84 yards in eight plays and was capped on a 35-yard touchdown strike from Jablonski to Epps.
Devin Silverman (Berlin, Conn.) added the PAT for a 7-0 lead.
The Owls needed just one play on their next drive, also a connection from Jablonski to Epps. This one covered 53 yards and extended the lead to 13-0.
Later in the opening quarter,
John Moscatel (Lexington, Mass.) punched it in from one yard out to make it 20-0 after a made PAT. The score was set up after another 53 yard pass from Jablonski to Epps.
Magee padded the advantage to 27-0 in the second quarter with his first of two scores on the day, this one from 11 yards out. Pace added a touchdown in the final minute of the half to make it 27-7 at the intermission.
SCSU restored its 27-point lead midway through the third quarter when Magee found paydirt from one yard out to cap a 10-play, 56-yard drive.
Pace answered in its next possession to cut the gap to 34-13 after a missed PAT. The Owls responded when Jablonski found
Jerome Cunningham (Waterbury, Conn.) from five yards out.
Jack Mallis (Windham, Maine) scored his first touchdown in the fourth quarter as the Owls went on to a 21-point victory.
SCSU finished with 286 yards on the ground.
Dequane June (Bronx, N.Y.) had 50 yards on eight carries, while Mallis tallied 47 yards on six carries. Cunningham finished with five catches for 58 yards.
Mike Dunkley (Yonkers, N.Y.) led the defense with eight tackles, while
Jack Cooper (Kensington, Conn.) had six stops and an interception.
The Owls return to action for the annual Homecoming game on Oct. 13 against AIC. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
