SPRINGFIELD, Mass. –Same result, different day for the Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team as they defeated their host, American Int'l ,for the second time this season in five-set fashion. With the win, the Owls start a new win streak that was extended to three tonight.
Both teams competed back on Sept. 14th during a non-conference match where the Owls gained the edge at home, 3-2.
Jade Black (Hudson, Ohio) registered her third straight double-double performance improving her season total to six with a 16 kill and 13 dig performance with a 0.375-hitting percentage. Freshman
Kelly Gunneson (Cheshire, Conn.) had a career night with 13 kills and two block assists.
Sarah Beres (Ellington, Conn.) and
Syriah Celestine (Greenlawn, N.Y.) each had six block assists on the night while Beres added 11 kills to her credit.
Olivia Lathrop (Farmington, Conn.) had a seven kill and four block performance for the Owls.
Kimberly Lachowicz (Mansfield, Texas) registered her 10th double-double of the season with 49 assists and 11 digs while posting six kills on a 0.400-hitting percentage.
Vanessa Sullivan (Paramus, N.J.) led the team in digs with 28, while
Morgan Carman (Mesa, Ariz.) added 15 off the bench.
The Owls charged out of the gate tonight to a quick 11-3 lead and did not look back as they claimed the first set 25-18. American Int'l responded and look poised to claim victory by winning the following two sets, 25-23 and 25-21. The Owls fought back in the fourth to a 12-4 lead which soon became a 22-11 lead. AIC rallied to within two points at 24-22, but a kill by Gunneson from Lachowicz pushed the match to a decisive fifth set. The Owls put their undefeated 5-0 season record in five set matches on the line but finished strong with by a score of 15-12.
The Owls improve to 17-5 on the season and 5-3 in conference play.
The Owls will be back in action later this week as they host Merrimack in Pelz Gymnasium scheduled for a 7 p.m. start time.
