EASTON, Mass. – Senior linebacker
Jack Cooper (Kensington, Conn.) intercepted a Stonehill pass and returned it 14 yards for a touchdown with 5:37 remaining in the contest to provide the margin of difference for the Southern Connecticut State University football team in its 13-10 win at Stonehill on Saturday. The Owls trailed 3-0 at halftime but scored 13 consecutive second half points and held on for the win.
Southern Connecticut concludes its 2012 season with a 3-8 mark, while Stonehill's season comes to a close at 5-5.
Stonehill held a 3-0 lead at halftime on a field goal by Steve Grzywacz that came 3:09 into the second quarter.
The Owls tied the game with 10:45 left in the third quarter on a 33-yard field goal from
Devin Silverman (Berlin, Conn.). SCSU then went in front for good just 1:06 into the final quarter on a 36-yard field goal from Silverman.
The score stayed that way into the closing minutes. Stonehill started a drive at its own 1 with 6:48 remaining and a chance to take the lead. However, on the third play on the drive, Cooper intercepted a pass and took it back for a pick six that ended the Owls' lead to 13-3 after a PAT by Silverman.
Stonehill would score a touchdown in the final minute, but the Owls recovered the onside kick and secured the win.
Quarterback
Jacob Jablonski (Gales Ferry, Conn.) completed 16-of-32 passes for 199 yards on the day.
Vaughn Magee (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) led the running backs with 79 yards on 21 carries.
Willie Epps (Norwalk, Conn.) and
Jayson Holt (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) each had four receptions, with Epps' 61 yards tops among wideouts.
The Owls' defense and special teams forced five Stonehill turnovers on the day.
Steven Teague (Hamden, Conn.) had a team-high nine tackles.
Nathan Tyler (West Hartford, Conn.),
John Parsons (Wilmington, Mass.) and
Mike Dunkley (Yonkers, N.Y.) each finished with seven tackles.
