BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team opened the 2012-13 season with a 94-77 victory over Goldey-Beacom at Harvey Hubbell Gymnasium in the UB Men's Basketball Classic in Bridgeport, Conn.
Trevon Hamlet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Owls with 28 points and five rebounds in 35 minutes of play. Hamlet shot 75 percent, and was 12-of-16 from the field.
Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.) had 17 points and three rebounds in 35 minutes.
Stefon Williams (Jamaica, N.Y.) had 14 points and five rebounds.
Deshawn Murphy (Hamden, Conn.) and
Rashamell Vereen (Meriden, Conn.) each chipped in 11 points in the game to cap five Owls in double figures.
The Owls (1-0) took the lead from the tip and never looked back. Langston made a pair of three-pointers off the bat and gave the Owls a quick 6-0 lead in the first half.
The Lightning (0-1) went on a 6-0 run when Charles Jackson made a jumper to make it 22-18 with 9:54 remaining. The Owls then went on a 9-0 run capped off by a layup from
Luke Houston (Pearl River, N.Y.) to take a 31-18 lead.
SCSU kept the lead in double-digits for the half, and went up by as much as 17 when Hamlet made a three-pointer to take a 46-29 lead into halftime.
The Owls kept a double-digit lead for the entire second half and went up by as much as 20. The Owls shot 51 percent from the field in the game, going 35-68.
Both teams had 37 rebounds in the game. The Owls had 11 offensive and 26 defensive rebounds.
Marcus Porter (18 points, eight rebounds) and A.J. Picard (13 points) led the Lightning in the game.
