Fantini's Three Lifts No. 21 Owls Over Dowling, 70-68

The Owls beat Dowling, 70-68 in the season opener on Saturday.



NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Camille Fantini (Andover, Mass.) hit a game winning three pointer with 28 seconds to go in the game to give the No. 21 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team a two point lead as it edged Dowling, 70-68 in a thrilling non-conference match on Saturday afternoon in the Owls season opener.

Dowling led the majority of the first half starting the game on a 7-0 run. The Golden Lions would only surrender the lead once in the half when the Owls took the lead, 28-27 with four minutes to go in the period. Danielle Wilson would score 16 of her game high 28 points in the first half to lead Dowling to a 38-33 halftime lead.

Dowling would keep the lead throughout the second half and had its biggest lead with 7:55 left in the half when Connie Simmons would capitalize on two free throws to put the Golden Lions up by 10, 60-50.

The Owls would answer and go on a 13-2 run, topped off by a Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) jumper to give the Owls a 63-62 lead with just under three minutes remaining in the second half. Simmons would give the Golden Lions the lead back when she converted a layup with just two minutes to go. After a Jackie Beathea (Annadale, Va.) layup to give the Owls a one point lead,  Moni Smith-Ocran (Bronx, N.Y.) would convert on two key free throws to give the Owls a 67-64 lead with under two minutes to play.

With 1:21 to go the Owls led 67-66 when Dowling's Christine Verrelle would force a turnover and Danielle Wilson would give the lead back to Dowling on a layup, 68-67.

With 28 seconds to go, down one,  Fantini would get the ball at the top of the key and burry a three pointer to give the Owls a 70-68 lead and SCSU would go on to win by that score.

Smith-Ocran pulled down 12 rebounds to go with her team-high 18 points and Hankton added 17 in the win. Beathea would finish with 11 points and five rebounds for the Owls.

The Owls (1-0) will be back in action Tuesday as they Travel to Adelphi at 5:30 p.m.
