Owls Conclude UB Men's Basketball Classic; Defeat Bridgeport, 71-57

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The  Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team concluded the UB Men's Basketball Classic by defeating Bridgeport, 71-57, at Harvey Hubbell Gymnasium in Bridgeport, Conn.

The Owls won both games of the weekend's opening tournament.

Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.) led the Owls going 11-of-17 shooting with 26 points and seven rebounds in 32 minutes of play.



Luke Houston (Pearl River, N.Y.) also had 12 points, three rebounds and two steals. Trevon Hamlet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had 10 points, five rebounds, four blocks and four assists.



Tylon Smith (Manchester, Conn.) came just short of both a double-double and a triple-double with nine points, nine assists, and seven rebounds.

Bridgeport took an 11-10 lead after a layup by Eddie Asamoah, assisted to Darian David.

The Owls (2-0) then went on a 29-11 run overall for the remainder of the half. A layup from Hamlet capped off a 6-0 run to take a 16-11 lead, and forcing a Bridgeport timeout with 10:02 remaining.

The Owls scored another six straight points to take a 27-14 lead with 5:07 remaining in the half capped off by a layup from Rashamell Vereen (Meriden, Conn.), assisted to Smith.

SCSU had as big as a 19-point lead late in the half, 39-20, after a layup by Houston, and took a 39-22 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Bridgeport would chip away at the Owls and close the gap.

Ognjen Zoric made a jumper to cut the lead to 43-31 with 16:05 remaining, but Houston fired right back with a three-pointer to make it 46-31.

The Owls brought the lead up to 19 with 11:12 remaining after a three-point play by Langston with a layup and a free-throw.

The Purple Knights then went on a 13-0 run capped off by a layup by Simic to cut the lead to 54-48 with 6:39 remaining, forcing the Owls to call timeout.

The score was 66-54 with 2:14 remaining, but the Owls would score the next five points to seal the victory.

SCSU out-rebounded Bridgeport, 41-32, with 33 defensive rebounds.

Ivan Simic led Bridgeport (1-1) with 18 points and nine rebounds in 37 minute, and David chipped in nine points with three rebounds.
