Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.) scored all 22 of his points in the first half to lead the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team to a 64-54 victory over Adelphi in the Northeast-10 Conference opener in Garden City, N.Y.
Langston shot 4-of-9 from the field in 36 minutes of play.
Trevon Hamlet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also had eight points and eight rebounds.
Rashamell Vereen (Meriden, Conn.) had eight points and three rebounds.
Adelphi took a 15-9 lead after Bradley Simpson drove to the hoop for a bucket, assisted to Chris Ranglin.
Simpson then made a jumper, assisted to Sean Crawford, and gave Adelphi a 24-18 lead.
SCSU (3-0, 1-0 NE-10) would then go on a 12-0 to end the half capped off by nine straight points by Langston, including a three-pointer just before the end of the half to give the Owls a 30-24 lead.
Langston had 22 points in the first half.
The Owls were able to draw many chances to the free-throw line in the game. The Owls went 26-of-37 from the line in the game.
SCSU out-rebounded Adelphi, 44-37, with 37 defensive rebounds.
In the second half, Adelphi quickly fought right back with a 9-0 run to start the half. John Calarco hit a jumper, assisted to Simpson, giving Adelphi a 33-32 lead, and forcing the Owls to call timeout with 16:14 remaining.
SCSU went on a 5-0 run the would give them the lead for good when
Jose Cruz (Shrewsbury, Mass.) made a layup, assisted to Hamlet, to take a 37-34 lead with 12:50 remaining. Adelphi would then call timeout.
Stefon Williams (Jamaica, N.Y.) made a bucket, assisted to
Luke Houston (Pearl River, N.Y.), to give the Owls a 48-43 lead with 8:08 remaining in the game.
Adelphi cut the led to 52-47, but SCSU went on a 6-0 run to give them breathing room. The run was capped off when
Tylon Smith (Manchester, Conn.) made a layup to give the Owls a 58-47 lead with 3:33 remaining, forcing an Adelphi timeout.
Simpson led Adelphi (1-2, 0-1 NE-10) with a double-double on 14 points and 13 rebounds. Calarco also had 14 points while Anthony Libroia chipped in 11 points and four rebounds.
