NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior forward
Moni Smith-Ocran (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 14 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, but the Southern Connecticut State University (2-2, 0-2 NE-10) women's basketball team fell short, falling to Assumption (4-0, 2-0 NE-10), 68-47 on Tuesday night in a Northeast-10 Conference game.
The game was tied at six apiece early, but the Greyhounds would take control with an 11-0 run to take a 17-6 lead with 9:25 remaining in the first half. Gabrielle Gibson led the Greyhounds with 13 first half points as Assumption would lead by double-digits throughout the first half.
The Owls would try and answer late in the first half with a spurt of their own when sophomore guard
Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) capitalized on two free throws and after a defensive stand on the other end, Smith-Ocran hit a jumper to put the Owls within nine. However, the Greyhounds would answer with four straight points to end the half and go into the break with a 31-17 lead.
The second half was much of the same for the Owls only cutting the lead to as little as 11. The Greyhounds biggest lead was 22 and they would go on to win by a final score of 68-47.
Gibson would lead all scorers with 20 points and teammate Katy Howard tallied 14 points for the Greyhounds.
The Owls were held to only 37 percent shooting from the field and shot 2-10 from three point range.
Smith-Ocran posted her fourth double-double of the year, while freshman forward
Danielle Powell (Pine Bush, N.Y.) added 13 points. Hankton chipped in with eight points and freshman
Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) scored six points in the loss.
The Owls will be back in action on Nov. 28 when they travel to New York, N.Y. to take on Pace at 5:30 p.m.
