NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman forward
Jackie Beathea (Annadale, Va.) scored 21 points for the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team, but they fell to American International (4-3, 2-2 NE-10), 70-56, in a Northeast-10 Conference game on Saturday afternoon.
The Owls got off to a hot start taking an early 10-3 lead after Beathea capitalized on two free throws. With just over eleven minutes remaining the first half the Owls would take their biggest lead after Beathea received a pass from
Camille Fantini (Andover, Mass.) and laid it in to give Southern a 16-7 lead.
The Yellow Jackets would answer late in the first half with a 18-3 run capped off by a Briana Bishop layup with one second to go in the first half to give AIC a 31-23 halftime lead.
The Owls started the second half like they did the first. After back to back
Moni Smith-Ocran (Bronx, N.Y.) layups,
Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) would hit a jumper and the Owls trailed 31-29. The Yellow Jackets would respond and take a double digit lead with a little over eleven minutes remaining and would continue to lead by double-figures for most of the last 10 minutes and go on to win, 70-56.
Southern committed 28 turnovers in the loss, but held AIC to only 33 percent shooting from the field.
Beathea pulled down six rebounds to with her game-high 21 points. Smith-Ocran scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds for the Owls. Hankton and
Katie Stopera (Hollis, N.H.) also chipped in with nine points apiece.
Southern Connecticut (2-4, 0-4 NE-10) will be back in action on Tuesday when it welcomes LeMoyne to Moore Field House at 5:30 p.m.
