NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior
Camille Fantini (Andover, Mass.) scored 17 points to lead the Southern Connecticut State University (3-4, 1-4 Northeast-10) women's basketball team past Le Moyne (2-5, 1-4 Northeast-10) on Tuesday night, 69-52, in a Northeast-10 Conference game.
The Dolphins came out fast scoring nine of the first 11 points to take a 9-2 lead about five minutes into the game. The Owls would answer with a run of their own, scoring seven straight points to tie the game at 9 apiece, capped off by a
Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) jumper.
Southern would take the lead, 18-17, after freshman
Katie Stopera (Hollis, N.H.) buried a three pointer with just over 11 minutes to go in the first half. SCSU would only give up the lead one more time in the half and would take a 32-28 advantage into the break.
With just over three minutes gone by in the second half, the Owls would go on a 7-0 spurt led by freshman
Jackie Beathea (Annadale, Va.). She would convert on back to back layups for the Owls and after making one of two free throws on the following possession, Fantini would secure an offensive rebound and find Beathea one more time for an easy layup to give Southern a 46-35 lead with 14:33 to go.
The Dolphins would cut the lead to as little as four, but after the Owls took a double-digit lead with 8:15 remaining they wouldn't look back. Freshman
Danielle Powell (Pine Bush, N.Y.) would hit a 10 foot jumper to cap off an 11-0 run to give SCSU a 20 point lead, 65-45.
The Owls would go on to win by a final of 69-52.
Fantini would add seven assists and four rebounds to go along with her game-high 17 points. Beathea would record her fourth double-double of the year grabbing 16 rebounds and scoring 13 points. Stopera would also score in double-digits, registering 10 points.
Alex Marple scored a team-high 15 points for Le Moyne.
Southern will be on the road at the University of New Haven on Saturday as they face the Chargers at 1:30 p.m.
