NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team rallied back in the second half to defeat AIC, 68-62, on Saturday. Junior
Camille Fantini (Andover, Mass.) paced the Owls with a team-high 22 points and six steals in the win.
The Yellow Jackets got out to a fast start in the game, going on a 9-2 run in the first five minutes. The Owls quickly struck back with a couple of three-pointers from Fantini, who was 6-for-9 from behind the arc in the game.
The Yellow Jackets went on another run in the last five minutes of the first half to build a lead up of five points at halftime.
AIC tried to add to the lead at the start of the second half but the Owls struck first tie the game up with 16 minutes left to play. SCSU then went on a 13-4 run to pick up a lead of nine points with eight minutes left. AIC tried to erase the lead late and got it down to as low as four points with less than a minute to play but Fantini and
Sylvonya Moore (Stockton, Calif.) both hit two free throw attempts to seal the win for the Owls.
Fantini led the squad with 22 points and six steals in the game. Fantini also added five rebounds on the day.
Moni Smith-Ocran (Bronx, N.Y.) recorded a double-double, with 13 points and 12 boards.
Alex Fiola (Fall River, Mass.) tallied 10 points, four assists and two rebounds in the victory.
Sylvonya Moore added nine points to go along with seven rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Southern Connecticut improves to 19-4 and 15-3 in Northeast-10 Conference play. AIC drops to 10-13, 9-10 in Northeast-10 Conference action.
The Owls will be back at home Tuesday when they face off with Le Moyne College. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
