NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The No. 22 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team picks up their 20th victory on the season with a win over Le Moyne College tonight, 81-52. The Owls had an all around performance from everyone in the game. SCSU got out to an early lead, going on a 22-to-6 run through the first seven minutes of the game. Southern Connecticut continued on the attack and was able to build up a 22-point lead with less than nine minutes left in the first half. The 22-point lead was the highest in the first half. The Owls went into halftime with a 21-point lead over the Dolphins.
Both
Alex Fiola (Fall River, Mass.) and
Moni Smith-Ocran (Bronx, N.Y.) were in double figures after the half. Fiola was 4-for-5 from the field and 3-for-4 from behind the three-point line. Smith-Ocran was 5-for-6 from the field and tallied three steals.
The second half started as the first half, with the Owls going on an 11-to-3 run to improve their lead to 31 points with 16 minutes left in the game. The Owls let the Dolphins back into the game a bit and the lead was cut down to 19 points with six minutes to play. Southern Connecticut shut the door after that, finishing on a 13-to-3 run to end the game.
The Owls had five players with double-figures.
Camille Fantini (Andover, Mass.),
Moni Smith-Ocran and
Sylvonya Moore (Stockton, Calif.) all finished with a team-high 16 points. Fantini and Moore both finished with four steals and five assists. Smith-Ocran picked up a double-double with 12 rebounds to go along with 16 points and three steals.
Alex Fiola finished the day with 11 points and two assists.
Keshia Primo (Mississauga, Ontario) gave the Owls 14 points and two steals off the bench.
SCSU improved to 20-4 on the season and 17-3 in Northeast-10 Conference action. The Owls will be back in action Saturday, when they travel to play cross-town rival University of New Haven at 1:30 p.m.
