NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The No. 22 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeats cross-town rival University of New Haven, 75-65. Southern Connecticut let New Haven take an early lead in the first half. The Chargers jumped out to a four-point lead in the first few minutes of the game. The Owls responded but could never take the lead from Chargers. SCSU was finally able to break through with 10 minutes left in the first half and take the lead. The Chargers took the lead back shortly after that and pulled out to a lead as high as six points. With the six-point deficit, the Owls got the offense going and went on a 9-to-0 run to take the lead back. The Owls were able to keep the lead for the final seven minutes of the first half. Southern Connecticut was able to go into locker room at half up 42-36.
The Chargers tried to take the lead back in the second half but wasn't able to. The Owls kept a steady five-point lead throughout the first 10 minutes of the second half. New Haven got the lead down to as low as one point but was never able to take the lead back. SCSU started pulling away in the latter part of the second half, increasing the lead to as high as 11 points. Southern Connecticut never let New Haven back into the game.
The Owls had four players with double-figures.
Camille Fantini (Andover, Mass.) led the squad, recording a team-high 20 points, six assists and six steals.
Moni Smith-Ocran (Bronx, N.Y.) tallied 18 points, and nine rebounds in the win.
Sylvonya Moore (Stockton, Calif.) chipped in 15 points, and seven boards.
Alex Fiola (Fall River, Mass.) produced 11 points, two assists and two steals.
SCSU improved to 21-4 on the season and 18-3 in Northeast-10 Conference action. The Owls will wrap up the regular season Tuesday, when they travel to play Adelphi University at 5:30 p.m.
