Saint Rose Hands Women’s Basketball First Loss in 16 Games

ALBANY, N.Y. - The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team suffers its first loss in 16 games, being defeated by The College of Saint Rose today, 71-65. The Owls got off to a good start in the first half, not allowing the Golden Knights to take the lead the entire half. The lead for the SCSU was up and down all half, with the lead not getting higher than nine points. The nine-point lead for the Owls came at the seven-minute mark. SCSU ended up at half time leading 39-37.

The Owls and the Golden Knights started off the second half going back-and-forth with the lead getting no higher than five points in the first nine minutes. The Owls gave up the lead to the Golden Knights at the 12-minute mark and the Golden Knights were able to build up an eight-point lead with nine minutes to play. The Golden Knights never gave the lead back. The Owls had the lead down to just two points with less than a minute to play but the Golden Knights were able to hit four out of five free throw shots to secure the victory.

The Owls had four players with double-figures. Three of the four players finished with 14 points. Sylvonya Moore (Stockton, Calif.), Keshia Primo (Mississauga, Ontario), and Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) all had 14 points in the game. Both Primo and Hankton came off the bench for the Owls. Moore also added a team-high seven rebounds and four assists on the day. Camille Fantini (Andover, Mass.) tallied 11 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Owls.

SCSU drops to 17-4 on the season and 14-3 in Northeast-10 Conference action. The loss snaps the Owls 15-game winning streak. The Owls will be back on the road Wednesday, when they play Pace University. The game will start at 5:30 p.m.
