WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 25 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University baseball team scored three runs in the top of the ninth to defeat University of New Haven today, 7-4. The Owls got the scoring early in the first inning with a two-RBI homer by
Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.). The Chargers fired right back in the bottom half of the inning with two runs to tie the game up. New Haven added an additional run in the bottom half of the second to take a 3-2 lead. The Chargers did the same in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. SCSU battled back in the seventh with two RBI singles by
T.K. Kiernan (Wallingford, Conn.) and
Kyle Cummings (Hamden, Conn.) to tie the game up at 4-4. Geffert came up to two runners on in the ninth and delivered an RBI single to break the tie. Next batter, Byran Dorsey (Cheshire, Conn.) unloads with a double to score two runs to make it a 7-4 game.
A.J. Turnier (Waterford, Conn.) came in for the ninth and shut the door down.
Steve Landell (Higganum, Conn.) started for the Owls and was tabbed with the no decision. Landell allowed four runs, on eight hits and struck out eight batters in five innings of work.
Pat Egan (Aberdeen, N.J.) came in for Landell in the sixth and threw three innings of hitless baseball. Egan allowed three walks and struck out one. Egan was awarded the victory in the game. Turnier threw the final inning to record the save for the Owls.
Offensively,
Ryan Geffert led the ball club, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Dorsey tallied two RBI on his only hit of the game.
Sam Greenberg (Guilford, Conn.) and Cummings each recorded two hits apiece. Kiernan collected one hit and one RBI in the victory.
T.J. Shea (Hamden, Conn.) also recorded a hit for the Owls.
The Owls move to 21-10 on the season and 8-5 in Northeast-10 Conference action. They will be back in action Saturday, when they travel to Albany, N.Y. to play Adelphi University for three games. Game one of the doubleheader Saturday is scheduled to start at noon.
