NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 25 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University baseball team split with No. 14/18 nationally ranked Le Moyne College today, 7-2 and 7-4. The Owls jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game one with a two-out, two-RBI double by
Bryan Dorsey (Cheshire, Conn.). The Dolphins got one run back in the third with a RBI single to left field. The Owls tacked on three runs in the fourth with a two-RBI triple by
Greg Pacelli (Hamden, Conn.) and a bunt for a base hit by
Sam Greenberg (Guilford, Conn.) brought in Pacelli. SCSU added one more in the fifth with a RBI triple by
Michael Cleary (West Boylston, Mass.). Le Moyne got one back in the top half of the sixth but the Owls responded in the bottom half with a RBI single by
T.K. Kiernan (Wallingford, Conn.).
Chris Zbin (Colchester, Conn.) started for the Owls in game one and picked up the victory. Zbin gave up two runs, on six hits and fanned eight batters in five and 1/3 innings. Zbin left in the sixth when he was struck in the hand with a batted ball.
Pat Egan (Aberdeen, N.J.) came in relief for Zbin and went three and 2/3 innings. Egan only allowed one hit and fanned three batters.
Offensively, Cummings, Pacelli and Dorsey all collected two hits apiece. Dorsey and Pacelli also recorded two RBI and Cummings had one RBI. Greenberg, Kiernan,
Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.) and Cleary all had one hit in the victory.
In game two, the Dolphins jumped out for three runs in the third inning with a RBI double that scored two and the player ended up coming around to score on a single. SCSU cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth with a RBI by Dorsey. Le Moyne answered back in the top of the fifth with two runs to take at 5-1 lead. The Dolphins came back with two more in the sixth to make it a 7-1 game. The Owls found life in the eighth inning when
Peter Testa (Orange, Conn.) hit a bases clearing triple to make it a 7-4 game. The Owls went down in order to end the game in the ninth.
Rocco Cundari (Norwalk, Conn.) started for SCSU and threw four and 1/3 innings. Cundari allowed five runs, on five hits, and struck out four batters.
Pat Egan came in for Cundari in the fifth and pitched one inning. Egan allowed two runs on two hits.
Will Meade (Orange, Conn.) came in after Egan only allowed one hit and walk one through 3 and 2/3 innings.
Cummings, Geffert, and Cleary all collected two hits apiece in game two. Testa, Greenberg, and
Nick Baviello (Orange, Conn.) all had a hit in the loss.
The Owls move to 26-12 on the season and 13-7 in Northeast-10 Conference action. They will be back in tomorrow, when they host Le Moyne College for one game. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
