WALTHAM, Mass. –The Southern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team extended their win streak to seven in a four set match against Bentley as the Owls opened conference play with a 3-1 win. The Owls found themselves a step ahead of the Falcons from the start and taking the match: 25-20, 27-29, 25-14, 25-22.
Vanessa Sullivan (Paramus, N.J.) led the defense for the Owls as at least five different Owls recorded nine digs:
Morgan Carman (Mesa, Ariz.) and
Jade Black (Hudson, Ohio) each with 10, while and
Lauren McVey (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and
Kimberly Lachowicz (Mansfield, Texas) had nine digs.
Sarah Beres (Ellington, Conn.) and McVey tied for a game-high 14 kills apiece. Lachowicz notched her fourth 40+ assist performance on the season for the Owls with 42.
Southern started out the first set ahead most of the way before sealing it by a score of 25-20. The Falcons rallied back as the fans were treated to extra play in the second set that included 21 tied scores before Bentley nudged out the sets by a score of 29-27. In the third set the Owls jumped out to an 8-2 lead which soon turned into a 21-9 lead capped by a 9-0 run to take the set by a score of 25-14. In the fourth, the Owls played point-for-point until down 6-8 Bentley went on a 5-0 run, but the Owls responded to the challenge with a 4-0 run of their way to bring the set back to within three points. The Owls finished the set on a 12-5 run capped by two kills by Beres to claim the match 3-1.
With the win, the Owls avenge a loss to Bentley from a season ago to improve to 8-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.
The Owls will be back in action later this week for their first home conference match against Concordia on Thursday at 7 p.m.
