NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University football team scored the first 14 points of the game, but visiting Saint Augustine's countered with the final 30 points of the contest to claim a 30-14 win in a non-conference contest today at Jess Dow Field.
The Owls are now 0-3 on the year. St. Augustine's improved to 2-1 with the win.
Junior running back
Vaughn Magee (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) broke the 100-yard mark for the second straight game. He finished with 104 yards on 27 carries and scored a touchdown. Wide receiver
Vito Fornarelli (Colchester, Conn.) registered three catches for an even 100 yards. Quarterback
Jacob Jablonski (Gales Ferry, Conn.) completed 20-of-34 passes for 234 yards and one touchdown.
The Owls struck first with an 11 play, 80-yard drive on their second possession. Jablonski completed all five of his attempts on the drive, totaling 56 yards. Magee capped the drive with a one-yard touchdown run.
Devin Silverman (Berlin, Conn.) added the PAT for a7-0 lead.
The SCSU defense forced St. Augustine's into a three-and-out on the ensuing possession. The Owls took over at their own 17 yard line before assembling an eight play, 83-yard drive. Jablonski was also 5-for-5 on this series, good for 80 yards. A 46-yard pass from Jablonski to Fornarelli set SCSU up at the St. Augustine's 5. Two plays later, Jablonski hit
Jayson Holt (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) on a six-yard touchdown. Silverman's PAT made it 14-0.
The Hawks cut the gap to 14-7 with a 56-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second quarter. After a SCSU drive that was stopped just over midfield, St. Augustine's drove 46 yards to make it 14-13 following a missed PAT. A 30-yard field goal later in the frame put the visitors in front for good at 16-14.
St. Augustine's added a touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter and another in the closing minutes to extend the final score to 30-14.
Jack Cooper (Berlin, Conn.) and
Nathan Tyler (West Hartford, Conn.) each had 10 tackles to lead the defense on the day.
Jerome Cunningham (Waterbury, Conn.) had five catches to lead the receivers.
Willie Epps (Norwalk, Conn.) had four catches for 58 yards, while Holt had four receptions for 29 yards.
Southern Connecticut is back in action on Saturday for a road game at Merrimack.
